Ranw Aso-Rashid is an award-nominated writer, producer and director.
Born in 1993, he studied Biomedicine at the University of Westminster before becoming a qualified science teacher and Head of Department at a secondary school. At 19 years old, he made his first short film on an iPhone. Later as a teacher, to support his students getting into film school, he made films with them. He later founded and is the CEO of AR Studios, an independent globally-minded company with a mission to create bold cinema at scale across markets. Aso-Rashid wrote, produced and directed the international co-production “Our Little Act of Rebellion” which is currently on the international festival circuit, has been acquired by global streamer Minute Shorts and is in HETV development. His debut feature documentary “The Lost Photography of Kurdistan” is being executive produced with BAFTA nominee Clare Richards (Founder of We Are Doc Women).
His multi award-nominated “The Silent Choice” is now BIFA-qualified, tracking for BAFTA, and will be released on Amazon Prime via ShortsTV (total 15m subscribers) globally. His film “Whispers of Redemption” is now streaming on MYM Media (468K subscribers), and will be released on Minute Shorts. Ranw is a jury member for the BIFA-qualifying KINO Film Festival and has been mentored by BAFTA/Emmy winner Marcus Liversedge, and seasoned producers Jane Frazer, Deborah Sheppard, Jo Woolf and Clare Richards. He’s also a judge for the British Short Film Awards.
In addition to his filmmaking career, Aso-Rashid is a Jack Petchey Award-winning science teacher in South London and has provided over 130 students both in the UK and abroad, including from the London Screen Academy, with mentorship, first paid jobs, and work experience since 2017. Part of AR Studios’ ambitious international documentary slate is entering production and is led on with support from Oscar-nominated producer Hanna Polak. Aso-Rashid is due to commence his Masters degree in STEM Education (MA) at King’s College London in 2025, to contribute more widely to STEM initiatives in both the creative and education sectors.
